We all cleanse our faces every day but are we doing it right or are we doing more harm? I mean, washing our face is really easy. We only need to splash some water on our face, get some cleanser, rub the cleanser onto our face and wash the cleanser off with water again. What is so difficult about it?
"A proper effective facial routine keeps your skin clean, refreshed and radiant looking," says Dr Chua Han Boon, Aesthetic Consultant from SW1 Clinic. "When you cleanse with the right product for your skin type, this will prevent acne breakouts, improve skin health and even reduce the chance of skin inflammation."
Mistake #1: Skipping the Before Bed or Morning Cleanse
Washing your face thoroughly at night is an important step in your 101 skincare routine, even if you do not apply any foundation. "We are constantly exposed to the environment during the day, therefore natural oil, sweat and dirt accumulate on the skin by the end of the day," says Dr Chua, "If these are not removed with a cleanser that is suitable for your skin type, they can cause skin irritation, acene or even inflammation."
When you are snoozing off in Slumberland, bacteria from your saliva, oil from your hair or germs from your pillow can travel to your face as you sleep, even if you wash your pillowcases often. It is recommended by the expert that you should wash your pillowcase every three weeks and pillows every three months. Therefore, a morning cleanse is essential to freshen up your skin and allows your day skin care products to be efficiently absorbed into your skin.
Dr Chua recommends Chái Skin Laundry III that remove debris and clogs so that your skin is clean and all ready to kick start the day. Mistake #2: Turning the Water Temperature a Rad Too High
Extreme temperatures such as hot, steamy showers or hot water may sound good in the shower but you are in fact messing up the way your skin protects itself or even damage such as dilation of blood vessels and breakage of delicate skin tissue.
"Hot water dries out, damages and strips off the outer most barrier that helps to maintain the skin strength and integrity," says Dr Chua. "This barrier forms a shield to protect our skin from external environment factors while holding moisture in. Your skin will dry out faster and become flaky and itchy over time." If you are really shivering in the show, opt for lukewarm water instead of hot water.

Mistake #3: Using Your Face Cleanser to Remove Full Makeup
Most cosmetics brands are smudge-proof or waterproof, so your basic cleanser that you use in the morning will definitely not remove them thoroughly. Instead, use a gentle micellar water remover like Chái Reset to remove dirt, oil and makeup that you accumulated before you cleanse for the day or a 2-in-1 oil-based makeup remover and cleanser like Chái Lemon Quartz that does not strip the skin's natural moisture level.
Mistake #4: Wiping Your Face with Your Shower Towel
Do you wipe your face with your bath towel? There is a reason why a face towel is provided at hotel rooms. You may have been fresh from the bath but do you know that different micro-organisms live in different parts of your body? You will not want to spread the bacteria from your body to your face so do keep a separate cloth for your face.

Mistake #5: Not Moisturizing Right After Cleansing
I remembered attending a beauty talk by a Korean skincare brand some years back, the company's rep was a Korean guy who may look nothing like Song Joongki or Ji Chang-wook, but his skin was just as smooth, milky and flawless just like the two actors. One tip he shared was his 3-sec rule of washing his face--- apply toner and moisturiser immediately right after cleansing. His rationale was that if he had waited 10 minutes after bathing, the surface cells of his skin would have been dehydrated and it would be even harder to moisturise even if you have the best moisturiser in the world.
