Skin Expert Tips: A Foolproof Guide to Layering Skincare

Layering is a skill. For those who're baffled by the proper product order, we've spoke to Dr Low Chai Ling, Medical Director of The Sloane Clinic and compiled this guide to creating the ultimate skin care sandwich.

#1.Work from lightest to heaviest
Serums or 'essences' come first as they're most readily absorbed (and usually the most targeted). "Their low viscosity enables them to penetrate most deeply, where the potent actives set to work correcting your skin's 'issues'." says Dr Low Chai Ling.

"I like Jurlique's Activating Water Essence (USD $55). It feels like water but is brimming with hyaluronic acid to maintain moisture levels,  it activates your skin’s ability to retain moisture and enhances the overall performance of your serum and moisturizer." - Gigi, Beauty Intern

Dr Low says," Sloane Inc's Miracle Lift (USD $170) provides a hefty dose of collagen-boosting peptides and cell-supporting vitamins in a featherlight formulation, so you build stronger, gravity-defying skin sans the pore-clogging weight of rich anti-ageing creams."

#2. Add an antioxidant

"The weightless elixir sinks in almost instantly, whilst creating an invisible shield which keeps ‘good stuff’ in and ‘bad stuff’ out – so skin feels consistently smooth, firm and hydrated, and is safe from oxidative stress." - Noelle, Beauty Writer

#3. Take your time
Which isn't always easy when you're trying to actually leave your house, but allowing your products to 'sink in' will minimise the likelihood of 'pilling' (you know those weird grey worms? Yeah, those). Try to integrate your skin care with your usual morning ritual - apply a serum after showering, then have your breakfast before the second step.

#4. Seal the goodness in
Seal the goodness in with a day cream, gel or lotion, depending on your skin's hydration needs.

We like Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Cream (USD $52.00). This is a concentrated 30 percent hyaluronic acid cream that provides your skin with a continuous burst of intense hydration that lasts up to 72 hours.

Pixi's Glowtion Day Dew (SGD $36) is ideal for dulled, congested complexions it stars kaolin and lavender alongside light-reflective particles, to help eliminate impurities while granting a gorgeous skin-finish.

#5. Up the oils
As a rule, oils are able to penetrate creams but not vice versa, so warm a small amount between your fingertips and press onto dry areas.

#6. Finish with an SPF
Yep, even in the DEEPEST DARKEST DEPTHS of winter. Sloane Inc's Ultralite Clear Finish Suncreen SPF 50 (USD $58) is completely non-chalky and won't clog your pores while providing sustained, broad spectrum SPF 50 defense against the damaging effects of UV rays.
