The Sun & You: A No-BS Guide To Sunscreens

In Singapore you're bound to be a sun-worshipper whether you like it or not. Here are some sunscreens and products that offer ample protection for your skin

Fun in the sun is all well and good, but the days of slathering on tanning oil and baking till you're brown are well and truly over. Science has proven that the UVA rays emitted by the sun age you, while UVB rays cause skin burning — both lead to accelerated ageing. The key to sun protection is applying a good sunscreen to your face and all exposed areas of your body — such as your neck, ears and even the tops of your feet — at least twenty minutes prior to sun exposure. And dermatologists recommend that for ample protection you need approximately one teaspoon of sunscreen (5ml) to cover your entire face, and more for other areas. Here are some of our favourite sunscreens.
#1. For Oily, Acne-Prone Skin: SkinCeuticals Physical Matte UV Defense SPF 50
Grease-prone girls, take note: This little beauty not only packs a protection punch of SPF 50, it also mattifies oily skin and leaves your complexion looking powdery-perfect. It has a light tint and goes on a bit like a makeup primer. We used it for both our regular daytime protection and sitting poolside, and our skin stayed oil-free, zit-free, and, most importantly, burn-free in both scenarios.

$34 USD, available at SkinCeuticals.

#2: For Sensitive Skin: Eve Lom Daily Protection + SPF 50
If you have allergies or sensitivities to physical sunscreen ingredients, try this chemical SPF cream from Eve Lom. The oil-free formula is also free of zinc and titanium dioxide, and uses a potent mix of firming and brightening ingredients to tone, smooth, and clarify your complexion. The addition of lactic acid also ensures breakouts won't be a problem — it might even help you fight off the ones you already have.

$90 USD, available at Barneys New York.

#3: For Dry Skin: Kate Somerville Daily Deflector Waterlight Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ PA+++ Anti-Aging Sunscreen

Physical sunscreens (SPFs comprised of minerals instead of chemicals) are commonly thick, but Kate Somerville’s new mineral SPF is as light as they come. It contains a delivery system that helps the broad-spectrum SPF stay on the surface of skin, while built-in anti-agers penetrate to deliver moisture and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

#4. Oral Sunscreen: Sublingual Glutathione
We're serious about this. The latest buzzword in anti-ageing is Glutathione after many studies have shown its superior benefit in lightening and brightening complexions while simultaneously retarding free radical damage, thus keeping skin youthful, supple and fair. However, research has shown that oral glutathione may not be as effectively absorbed as its sublingual counterpart, which demonstrates superior bioavailability for skin whitening. Produced by youthful skin cells, Glutathione is the master antioxidant and detoxifier with additional anti-melanogenic properties that prevent complexions from darkening. With age, replenishing our depleted Glutathione reserves is one smart investment for beautiful skin.

Instructions: 2 tablets to be dissolved under tongue or as instructed by your physician.

#5. SPF Makeup: Sloane Inc BB Powder SPF 50
Don't be fooled by the weightless feel of this ultra-light translucent powder. The skin protection it provides is heavy-duty. This medicated sunscreen powder treats skin while providing natural, breathable coverage. Built on patented technology of skin actives including lipo-fullerene to help combat the evil forces of aging, it gives skin super powers as it rebuilds collagen, fights photo-damage, while combating acne and clogged pores. All this while it delivers full-spectrum physical sunscreen protection of SPF50 (the PA+++ rating means it shields against both UVA and UVB rays).

$48 USD, available at
#6. For Your Hands: Supergoop Forever Young Hand Cream SPF 40 with Sea Buckthorn
For the serious sun-phobic, Supergoop! is serving you SPF 40 with this hand cream. You could probably use it on the rest of your body too, since the sea buckthorn contained in it has multiple skin-nourishing benefits.

$12.00–$38.00 USD, available at

#7. For Your Body: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock SPF 70
Neutrogena’s sunscreens are a drugstore staple, especially the Dry-Touch formula that feels super silky smooth on, not sticky or thick. You can’t go wrong with this waterproof broad spectrum crowd favorite. Apply to your whole body before you jump into a pool!

$24.80 SGD, available at all leading drugstores in Singapore

#8. For Your Hair: ALTERNA Haircare Bamboo Beach Summer Sunshine Spray Protective Shine Veil
This collection was designed specifically to address women's unique summer hair needs. Too much sun, beach, or pool time can lead to distressed, dehydrated hair prone to breakage. This spray instantly polishes, tames frizz and flyaways, and adds brilliant shine to hair—creating a veil to protect it from the harsh summer elements. It is infused with complete color and UVA/UVB protection to help combat the damaging effects of the sun, pool, and saltwater. Hair is noticeably softer, less frizzy, and vibrant.
