How to Wake Up With Better Skin and Hair (for Real)

Beauty sleep is a real thing IF you take the time to indulge in a few easy tips and tricks. Some life facts—like waking up to a blaring alarm clock on a Monday—are tough, but we all enjoy it when we look and feel our best. Agree? Great. With that in mind, I’ve put together five of my most sacred editor hacks to wake up with better skin and hair overnight. Keep scrolling to try them out and tell us what you think!

(+) Switch to Silk Pillowcases

I’ve heard this one for years, most recently from Kourtney Kardashian, who swears by it. Silk pillowcases cut down on those pesky face creases and imprints and are said to reduce lines in the long run. Regardless of pillowcase type, I always try to sleep on my back for the same reason.

Your most comfortable sleeping state may not be the best when it comes to beauty. An important and oft-neglected contributor for accelerated skin aging is sleeping on your face. Microcirculation is hampered in compressed skin, and daily dragging of your skin for multiple hours also predisposes to crease and wrinkle formation. Moreover, fluid tends to pool and result in puffiness when you sleep face down.

(+) Apply An Overnight Mask

For supple and dewy fresh skin in the morning, apply an overnight hydrating mask that contains humectants like hyaluronic acid or glycerin to bind water to your skin, as well as skin-identical lipids like ceramides that will fortify the fragile lipid barriers.

Yes, sleeping masks. If you’ve never heard of them, today’s your lucky day. These overnight treatments are meant to be applied as the last step in your routine right before bed. You sleep with them on and then wake up in the morning with beautiful skin. After using them as many times as each product directs, overtime these products will have your skin looking and feeling gorgeous.

Dry skin? Hydrate it overnight with this deeply-hydrating overnight sleeping mask. It will intensely moisturize and protect to deliver long-term anti-aging benefits and smoother, baby-soft skin all while you're asleep. The signature, lightweight botanical blend of tsubaki oil, wakame and rice bran oil works to hydrate, smooth and protext making you wake up with more firm, youthful skin.

For those looking for an anti-aging overnight mask, this is the one. This anti-aging, overnight, quick-absorbing gel enhances surface cell turnover and delivers continuous moisture. It contains niacinamide and kava that boosts the look of elasticity and firmess while Korean medicinal herbs help expel toxins and stimulate surface cell turnover. It will transform dull, dry, dehydrated skin with it's hyaluronic acid and leave you with a bright, firm and moisturized complexion when you wake up.

For those trying to cure their acne, this overnight acne medication will do just that. While you sleep, it treats blackheads and pores while absorbing excess oil. The array of powerful yet super gentle active ingredients calm redness, smooth wrinkles and deeply hydrates all while helping to clear your pores, blackheads and blemished giving you some clarity come morning time.

(+) Apply a Night time Serum
It's hard to remember what life was like before I discovered repairing night serums. Sleep is a time for your body to recuperate from the day. Why not allow your skin to do the same thing? Beautiful mornings start at night. As the entire body goes into repair mode, the skin renews and rebuilds itself in your slumber. Skincare containing AHA, vitamin A, antioxidants or collagen-boosting peptides supercharge your beauty sleep by optimising this dermal repair process.

(From Left) Sloane Inc Sleeping Peel has slow-release AHAs to promote healthy cellular turnover and unveil a fine luminosity; Sloane Inc White Plasma‘s complex of powerful antioxidant and synergistic amino acid fights skin-dulling free radicals by day and repairs pigment-inducing damage by night for a clear, even-toned glow.

Retinol is the most abundant form of Vitamin A in the skin. In order for your skin to be healthy, you need to keep supplying it with that essential vitamin. It can literally repair your skin on a DNA level. Hence, it’s powerful stuff. If you want to combat those signs and prevent them from showing up and getting worse, retinol is the key. It helps even out your skin tone and smoothes fine lines and wrinkles. So, you know, to keep that youthful glow, protect it now…along with sunscreen and drinking water, of course. If you’re prone to dryness, you may want to start out with an over-the-counter retinoid, which will give give you anti-aging and skin-improving results in a much more gentle way.

You may also wish to build your skin's tolerance to retinol by using it every alternate day and slowly increasing the usage as your skin becomes stronger.

There’s no quibble that retinoic acid (a prescription vitamin A) is crème de la crème of both the anti-acne and anti-ageing circles. To up the ante, the award-winning Sloane Inc. Age Defy combines clinical-strength vitamin A and skin-plumping collagen in an advanced formula to trump the bump, fade pimple marks and pigment spots, and sideline the age-exposing crinkles.

Combined with potent antioxidants, Paula's Choice's Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment is specially formulated with a creamy lotion texture that absorbs quickly and goes to work immediately to refine pore size and reduce the appearance of deep wrinkles, fine lines and brown spots. Licorice, oat extract and other anti-irritants help to minimize the potential for dryness, redness or flaking some people may get from products containing high amounts of retinol. You’ll be amazed at how much younger-looking and radiant your skin will look and feel. I find that this is a tad stronger so start using this every alternate day and let your skin build tolerance.

(+) No Caffeine or Refined Sugar at Night

A few years ago, I gave up consuming caffeine and refined sugar after lunch. Avoiding these stimulants improved not only the depth of my sleep but the way my skin and body feel when I wake up in the morning. Inversely, I've found beauty products containing caffeine help a great deal with under eye circles in the morning, and obviously coffee and healthy sugars from fruit like berries make us feel more awake. There's a time for everything!

(+) Brush Out Hair at Night
This trick is especially useful if you have long, fine hair like I do. It might be the last time of day you feel like fixing your hair, but I’ve found that brushing out tangles at night with the help of a conditioning spray or argan oil can result in amazing morning hair.

Argan oil is a fantastic oil treatment for weary locks. Simply warm it with your palms, apply to damp hair (and skin, while you’re at it), comb through, and breathe in the intoxicating scent. Say goodbye to frizzy, fried hair.
