Weatherproof Your Skin This Winter

Winter is tough on skin—moisture-zapping windchill and cold, dry weather are taxing on even the most resilient of complexions. There’s only one way to steel yourself against the season’s gnarlier effects, and that’s with plenty of moisture. For damage control, here's our edit of creams, balms and moisturisers that will weatherproof your skin.

A gel cleanser might work just fine for you in the tropics to keep shine and sebum production in check. But when the humidity dips, it’s time to switch that out to a creamy cleanser that doesn’t strip your face of essential oil and this might be all that is required to keep those pesky winter acne at bay.

Choose something gentle such as Sloane Inc. Vanilla Silk Cleanser, a light foaming delight that effectively lifts away dirt, make up, and other impurities to thoroughly cleanse your face without removing the essential lipids of the skin and thus help to keep your mien healthy and well hydrated with its potent blend of French sea waters, botanical extracts, gentle seaweed and sugar based exfoliants. Available exclusively online from The Sloane Shop and an absolute must-have in my travelling toiletries bag.

Enriched with amino acids known to help with tissue repair, Pure Hydrating Mist replenishes nutrients the skin needs to feel smooth, appear younger and feel calmer. This moisture-enhancing mist acts as body’s natural hydrator, to bind moisture to the skin, leaving your skin heart-poundingly glowing. Use as part of your skincare regime to help maximize the benefits of your treatments or on its own to optimize your skin health. Try packing this in your makeup bag for a mid afternoon touch up spritz. Use liberally! Your skin could use a pick me up.

If past experience sound off alarm that you’re prone to unsightly spots in winter, it is good to exfoliate once or twice weekly. Dead skin automatically clogs up you pores which means that oil and dirt will get stuck underneath the surface of your skin, sowing the seeds of evil to a “winter acne wonderland”. By exfoliating regularly, you are helping your pores stay clear which minimize the risk of breakouts greatly.

Opt for a face scrub that is gentle and contains nourishing ingredients such as jojoba beads such as Sloane Inc. Pineapple Enzyme Scrub which releases nourishing jojoba oil into the skin. This process produces improved skin texture and leaves the skin well moisturized with a luminous glow while effectively getting rid of grub that threatens to clog up the pores

(+) For Dryness: Eve Lom Radiance Lift Cream
Now's the best time to use the richest stuff possible. Your skin definitely needs extra hydration in the colder climate so make sure you bring along a good moisturizer that gives your skin the much needed boost and protection.

If you're struggling with dryness, use a moisturizer that is filled to the brim with antioxidants to fight environmental damage. It should also contain ingredients that help keep water in skin, anti-inflammatory ingredients to reduce irritation, and cell-communicating ingredients to help skin produce normal skin cells Eve Lom's Radiance Lift Cream is a rich, buttery cream with a subtle rose scent, this radiance-enhancing, skin-firming formula is an anti-aging fanatic’s winter dream. Packed with brightening vitamin C, intensely hydrating fatty acids, and naturally soothing oat kernel, it will leave you with soft, glowing skin that’s carefully safeguarded against the season’s worst aggressors.

Your skin has a natural moisture barrier – when it’s compromised, your skin will lose moisture, be more prone to breakouts and more sensitive due to the compromised barrier not being able to protect skin against external irritation! Sensitive skin can flare up at the slightest provocation.

Help fortify sensitized skin and a damaged barrier with this velvety, anhydrous (waterless) moisturizer. This moisturiser has been created with the sole purpose of protecting the skin's barrier, which harsh winter conditions compromise, leaving skin dehydrated and sensitised. Using the brand's own Ultra Calming Complex, this cream prevents the triggers that cause inflammation, irritation, as well as any signs of burning or itching that many of us suffer from whenever the winter season starts.

At night, after you've applied your moisturizer, massage a few drops of oil over stubborn dry areas. These types of oils are not only incredibly emollient, they are also rich in antioxidants and that is great for skin. This serum concentrate acts like a veritable GPS for hydration – using adaptive technology to carry the mega-moisture and pollutant protection of naturally-sourced, antioxidant-loaded organic olives right down to the heart of the epidermis. With an exceptional silky touch, highly prized pure olive squalane delights the senses as it deeply conditions, strengthens and brings relief to dry, flaky skin, and nurses it into a supple, healthy glow without plugging pores or causing breakouts.

It's not always easy to remember to wear sunscreen in the summer, but it's hard to forget it completely. Warm temperatures plus the blazing sun make covering up kind of a no-brainer. But in the winter months, when it’s dark at noon and the thermometer rarely creeps above freezing, only a lunatic would be extra diligent with SPF, right? Here’s the thing: Anytime it's light outside — meaning you’re not in a pitch-dark coal mine — you’re getting UVA and UVB exposure. Don’t forget to add SPF protection to your skin to protect it from fine lines and pre-mature ageing. Hence, be sure to apply liberal amounts of sunscreen that comes with dual protection against both UVB and UVA; making sure not to miss out on “blind zones” such as the lips, ears, around the eyes, neck and décolletage. Other sun exposed areas such as the arms, back of hands, legs and dorsum of feet should be cared for as well. Try Sloane Inc Sunblock SPF 70. It comes with a mega dose of sun protection in a matte base. This no-nonsense, 100% chemical-free, fragrance-free, water & sweat proof total blocker blends 3 antioxidant teas, an invisible shine-absorbing micro mesh & UV reflectors.

If your skin condition seems to be spiraling south, it’s time to call in the reinforcements. Revitalift counters deep age-related dehydration by replenishing dermal hyaluronic acid – skin’s natural internal moisturiser that’s depleted over time. Like a wake up call to sluggish skin, life-bestowing aqua energises skin cells and activates elasticity-enhancing collagen regeneration to greet you with a dewy, well-rested glow and supple firmness every morning.

Also remember to hydrate inside and out. Chilly temps and indoor heating zap your skin of much-needed moisture. Besides drinking plenty of water, consider sleeping with a humidifier. You’ll wake up with more radiant skin AND have an easier time staving off those nasty winter viruses.
