Zit Zapping Superstars

Today's post is about pimples/zits/breakouts/acne or whatever you call it. Recently I have been plagued with nasty breakouts all over my face due to hormonal woes and lifestyle indiscretions - IE: late nights, inadequate sleep and junk food.  I suddenly I feel like I've been transported back in time, feeling like a 16 year old all over again; with oily skin, mushrooming blackheads and whiteheads, and a pimply explosion on my chin or jawline that just wouldn’t quit?

After a week of battling with stubborn, unsettling breakouts, I scheduled an emergency lunch time appointment with The Sloane Clinic to seek aid to bust those damn zits. I was consulted by Dr Low Chai Ling and she recommended for me to try out their Clear-Fection Facial. This facial combines deep cleansing, dead cell exfoliation using their signature ultrasonic deep cleansing treatment, PPx vacuum + light therapy to detoxify pores and keep sebaceous glands tame & balanced, followed by a fruit acid wash to refine troubled skins.

After the facial, I was prescribed with 6 zit busting superstars based on my skin condition. FYI: The Sloane Clinic carries other proprietary products which are targeted for acne prone skins. You must consult a doctor and he/she will prescribe products accordingly.

Moving on, there are many contributing factors to explain one's zitty state – dietary imbalances, hormonal fluctuations, jet-setting, emotional stress – just to name the frequent few. Of all of the symptoms that wreak havoc in women’s lives when they’re struggling with hormonal woes, it seems like acne is at the top of the list when it comes to symptoms that are frustrating, demoralizing, and deeply connected to a woman’s ability to feel like herself.

Here’s a simple step-by-step pimple-busting protocol that’s backed by solid science.

1. UNPLUG THE CLOGGED DRAINAGE

First things first: For your products to work, they have to be properly absorbed by your skin. A common barrier that’s stopping the goodies from being delivered efficiently is an excessively thick layer dead skin cells.

Everyone understands the importance of a proper cleanse, but radiant skin also requires exfoliation, or simply put, the process of removing dead skin cells from the skin’s topmost layer. When left to its own devices, the body naturally exfoliates through the process of desquamation, or cell turnover: a new skin cell is born in the deepest layer of the epidermis and during its life span, migrates to the uppermost layer of skin. While most dead skin cells leave home and turn into dust, some decide to linger—these are the troublemakers that cause pigmentation inconsistencies, a duller complexion, and blocked, irritated pores that can become blemishes. Unfortunately those suffering from acne are already dealing with a skin turnover process that's a little slower than ideal. The presence of acne produces more dead skin cells than typical, which also means that the skin has even more zombie cells to fend off. So time to exfoliate.

An effective exfoliating, retexturizing, refining, and nourishing treatment scrub, harnessing the magical dual combination of Bromelain enzyme (which is obtained from pineapple) and supple Jojoba beads. Bromelain enzyme helps to effectively remove excess surface cells to uncover brighter, clearer skin, while micro spherical jojoba beads dissolve to release nourishing jojoba oil into the skin. This synergy boosts skin texture and leaves the skin with a refined, luminous glow. Don't be fooled by its seemingly humble beginnings, as this natural born face saviour refines, purifies and nourishes your skin simultaneously to leave you supple, glowing and pristine.  I use this once every 3 days to get rid of dead cells and clogged junk.

Blackheads – just the word itself gets people riled up. If you suffer from the strawberry nose (or in some cases, the entire face), you’ve likely been fighting a never-ending battle. This ‘open comedone’ is essentially a plug made up of sebum, dirt and dead skin cells at the surface of the pore. While heredity and hormonal status are factors beyond your control, changing pore-clogging habits like piling on loads of makeup and inadequate exfoliation can help keep you in the clear.

Consistent use of skincare products with BHA or retinoids is a good way to start, as they can dissolve the micro-plugs and regulate healthy cell shedding to reduce the reappearance of blackheads. On a daily basis, those with acne-prone or oily skin can also consider upgrading to an acid-containing cleanser or enzyme-based serum to dissolve away clog-inducing dead cells. Sloane Inc's Fruit Enzyme Renewal is a genius non-oily serum does wonders for clogged, misbehaving skins. Natural enzymes do double duty in helping to heal and reduce acne blemishes while preventing future breakouts at the same time.

Fun Fact: When it comes to skincare, opposites have synergistic benefits for combination skin. The Sloane Clinic's Pumpkin Enzyme Purifying Peel purges pores while the skin illuminating oxgen boost masque doubles the complexion benefits by energizing fatigued complexions which is present in most acne-prone skin types.

Too often, nasty breakouts leave their mark: Brown spots and persistent redness triggered by the injurious inflammation may linger for months. So stop picking at your pimples! Depressed and occasionally, raised scars serve as permanent reminders for victims of the spotty calamity. Sun protection and skin products containing vitamin C, mild AHA or fade creams are a great way to start by helping you hasten the recovery from pigmented blemishes.

This elixir is formulated with an active hydra-stabilized Vitamin-C (L-Ascorbic Acid) which  helps to reduce the visible sign of photo aging by fighting destructive free radicals. These productive functions result in retextured, toned, and younger looking skin. However, this potent antioxidant has the reputation of being highly unstable. So even though, Vitamin C does possess definite, scientifically validated merits for wrinkle reduction and skin rejuvenation, its instability causes a lot of Vitamin C products to be rendered useless.  A number of skin care companies offer highly concentrated stabilized vitamin C products, which (at least in theory) are supposed to be consistently effective. However, these products are usually quite expensive. Furthermore, even stabilized vitamin C products may be at least somewhat degraded by the time you use them. Interestingly, some manufacturers add coloring to their vitamin C products, in which case it becomes hard to spot advanced vitamin C degradation. Whatever the motives for adding color may be, we recommend avoiding vitamin C products that aren't colorless or white. When selecting a vitamin C product it is important to pick a trustworthy source and be careful about the expiration date and proper storage.
